It’s time to sign up for summer camp!
Published on: April 1, 2015
The sun’s rays may still be weak, but fear not, summer is on it’s way! And so is the end of the school year. Have you thought about what your kids will do during the summer ? Summer camp registration is in full swing, and we’ve gathered some useful advice to help you choose and book the best camp for your children.
More than just babysitting
Summer camp is all about great experiences, new friends, and unforgettable memories. It’s an opportunity for kids to acquire new skills while having a great time. And of course, you enjoy peace of mind at work knowing they’re in good hands!
Sure, going to camp is fun for kids, but it also boosts their self-esteem, autonomy, sense of accomplishment, and feeling of belonging. It’s simply a matter of deciding what kind of camp suits them best.
The best fit
The choices are endless. Camps can last anywhere from one week to the entire summer. Some are day camps, while others offer onsite accommodations, an option less suited to very young children or especially anxious youngsters. Other factors also need to be taken into consideration. Here are a few points you should keep in mind when choosing:
- Interests: The ever-popular traditional summer camp revolves around outdoor activities. But times are changing, and theme camps are all the rage: arts, sports, astronomy, music, cooking… you name it! Opt for a camp that reflects your child’s personality and interests.
- Special needs: There are also camps designed specifically for kids with special needs, including children with disabilities, learning disorders, or hyperactivity. Be sure to search around and ask the right questions.
- Trust: Before you can reassure and motivate your child, you need to be sure of your decision yourself. Attend Open House events, meet with the counselors, and be attentive to other parents’ comments.
- Judgment: You know your child best and you know what’s likely to tickle his or her fancy. Don’t be afraid to offer your child options. Who knows? Maybe Junior will discover a hidden talent! Take your kids to check out the camp in person.
- Site: Why not send your little city slickers to a wilderness camp? Or your mini Tarzan to a museum camp in the big city? In other words, give your child the chance to try something completely different. And if your children are older and your budget allows, you could broaden their horizons even more by sending them to a camp in the U.S. or even abroad!
